Downtown Plano - A Vibrant Neighborhood With a Vibrant Urban Lifestyle
Updated: Jul 16, 2023
Plano is a vibrant, authentic neighborhood with a transit-oriented urban lifestyle that is rare in suburban communities. Its robust transit village plan is a true planning success story.
Eaters choose from a wide variety of independent restaurants. Enjoy freshly-baked decadent cakes at XO Coffee Company or try a Cuban sandwich at Latin Sugar. Bulla Gastrobar offers plenty of indoor and outdoor space for family and friends to share tapas.
Legacy West
The largest urban mixed-use destination in North Texas, Legacy West is a city within a city. The 255-acre district offers plenty of open-air high-end shopping and restaurants, including Louis Vuitton, Chanel Fragrance & Beauty, Kendra Scott, Lululemon Athletica, and more.
Visitors to the area can also find an array of local treasures, including neighborhood favorites like Read Between The Lines and the only brick-and-mortar location in Texas for Frontgate. The center features 32 destination retailers and 22 memorable restaurants.
If you’re planning on visiting the Legacy West, it’s best to stay at a hotel that offers convenient transportation links. TownePlace Suites by Marriott Dallas Plano/Legacy, Residence Inn by Marriott Dallas Plano/Richardson at Coit Rd and Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Dallas Plano - Richardson Area are all popular options that offer transport links.
Haggard Park
Haggard Park is one of Plano’s hidden gems and a beautiful place to take a stroll with kids. It features a playground, plenty of grassy areas, a pretty pond, picnic areas, chess boards, and paved walking paths. It also hosts events such as Summer Movies at the Park and outdoor weddings. It is also home to the Interurban Railway Museum which is free to enter.
Despite its small size, Haggard Park hosts a variety of events each year, from the Plano International Festival to polka and beer at the annual Plano Steinfest. There is also a community band, the Plano Community Band, that plays concerts in the park every summer. The park is also the venue for the popular Chicken Dance.
Plano Antique Mall
Unlike many single antique stores, which often cater to only one type of collector, an antique mall typically features items that appeal to many different niche markets. These may include furniture, jewelry, and other decorative pieces as well as old books and knick-knacks.
The 50,000-square-foot mall is filled wall to wall with antique artwork, furniture, clothing, and collectibles. It also offers home decor and accent pieces such as rugs and paintings.
The mall was once a bustling center of commerce before Garden Ridge Pottery left last year, leaving the building mostly empty. Hill says that she hopes new tenants will entice shoppers to return. She points out that the one guy who works there every day sweeps and waters the plants. He’s been there 25 years.
Crayola Experience
Crayola Experience is the ultimate destination for creativity and fun. This premier one-of-a-kind family attraction is bigger, brighter, and bolder than ever. Dozens of hands-on creative activities help kids and families explore art and technology, express their creativity, and experience color in a new way.
Guests can name and wrap their very own crayons, star in a coloring page and create melted wax spin art. Kids can also watch how crayons are made in a live factory show.
Located at the Shops at Willow Bend, this is the fourth Crayola Experience location. The company has also locations in Easton, Pennsylvania; Orlando, Florida; and Bloomington, Minnesota. The 60,000-square-foot Plano location is the first to open in a mall. The attraction is owned and operated by BrightColors, which specializes in creating and managing national family entertainment attractions.
Art Centre of Plano
Plano’s downtown area is a lively neighborhood with a bustling urban lifestyle that’s rare in suburban communities. A robust transit village plan and downtown zoning have helped drive the organic transformation of this historic district.
For example, the new McCall Plaza brings a live performance space to this thriving downtown. And the restored Saigling House now serves as a cultural center with galleries, classroom space, and more.
A stroll down the charming brick-lined streets of downtown Plano gives us all the good, happy feel. From the Interurban Railway Museum to Haggard Park and buildings that hold intriguing chapters of the city’s past, there is something for everyone here. And we love shopping along these street-fronted blocks at boutiques like Lylas, which is a treasure trove of clothing, decor, and more!
